I discovered Kwandi by chance when researching arts of the African diaspora. I was fascinated by the technique that is rooted in history, has distinctive elements of construction and that can be easily adapted or added to an individuals textile and hand stitching language. The unique aesthetic makes each quilt unique to the maker.

Kwandi Quilt

Quilts are, and have been, part of lives throughout the world. They tell personal and cultural stories, from the choice of fabrics to the stitching, embroidery and applique.

Whilst there is a conformity within many traditional quilting processes, there is also a freedom if we have the courage to follow our own path. So often as artists we look to others for validation, however a richer source is to look within. If we can develop our own processes and narratives then the quilt is an exceptional format for creativity that can become a work of art, a comforting blanket and often both.

I adapted and combined the traditional technique and process, to create my own aesthetic and visual language which is now my principle way of working in two-dimensional quilts and wall hangings.
